China Stops N. Korean Deportations Over Rocket

David Nealis President of Blue Bridge
The article below along with the news of China's condemnation of North Korea in the UN, gives me hope that change will be coming to North Korea in the very near future. Let's hope for the people of North Korea that there will be postive changes soon.

China stops N.Korean deportations over rocket: report.
AFP

TOKYOChina has stopped sending fleeing North Koreans back across the border, in retaliation for Pyongyang failing to consult its ally over last week's rocket launch, a Japanese report said Wednesday.

The Yomiuri Shimbun quoted two Chinese officials as saying the long-standing policy of swiftly returning any North Korean who made it across the border and into China -- despite the punishment they face -- had been put on hold.

"If refugees are sent back, that's the end of their lives. We can't ignore it," one official in Liaoning province, which borders North Korea, told the paper, adding that deportations had been halted.

Another official said the move was because Pyongyang had not consulted its patron about the botched launch of a rocket which the hermit state said was carrying a satellite, but which the West condemned as a banned missile test.

"North Korea failed to disclose specific plans of the missile launch to the Chinese side," the second official, whose position and location were not given, told the Yomiuri, Japan's biggest-selling daily newspaper.

The suspension reflects Beijing's displeasure with its troublesome neighbour which "did not show the necessary attention to its friend China," the official said.

China arrests and repatriates fugitives from North Korea, considering them to be economic migrants rather than potential refugees.

South Korea and international rights groups have urged Beijing to change the policy, saying returnees can face harsh punishment.

Since the December death of Kim Jong-Il, father of North Korea's youthful new leader Kim Jong-Un, officials in the bordering provinces of Liaoning and Jilin were aware of "about 30 North Koreans every day" crossing into China, the Liaoning official said.

North Korea's launch -- which failed when the rocket disintegrated shortly after blastoff -- was carried out despite international pressure including from China.

In an apparently related measure ahead of the launch, China allowed five North Korean defectors to leave for South Korea after they spent months or years holed up in Seoul's Beijing embassy to avoid arrest, media reports from the South said.

Pyongyang on Tuesday rejected UN condemnation of its rocket launch and said it would no longer adhere to an agreement with the United States to freeze its nuclear and missile programmes.

Tens of thousands of North Koreans have fled poverty or repression in their impoverished homeland, almost all of them across the border to China.

Some hide out among -- or marry into -- the ethnic Korean community in China's northeast. Others try to travel on to Southeast Asian nations before flying to Seoul.

Myanmar devalues their currency to black market rates.

In a public state Myanmar officials stated that Myanmar’s central bank plans to set the official exchange rate for the Kyat (their local currency) at close to its black market level, another positive sign as the nation pushes ahead with economic reforms.

The change from 6.4 to 800 Kyat to the US Dollar might seem like a colossal slide in value, but in the open market the exchange has been 820 Kyat per US dollar. Now Myanmar’s government institutions and state owned enterprises can use the new official rate which are more inline with global market values.

Cambodia has opened a stock exchange!

Cambodia has opened a stock exchange!

Though on its first day there were not any stocks traded, it’s a good step in the right direction for this Asian nation that has had a difficult road to economic stability and we should applaud them for it.

Three state companies; The Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority (PPWSA), Telecom Cambodia and Sihanoukville Autonomous Port are preparing listings on the exchange. Several private companies, including Post Media, owners of The Phnom Penh Post have also signaled their intention to list on the exchange in the near future.

I look forward to seeing them grow over the years and let’s hope in 10 years they are the next hot exchange to be trading on.

Dim Sum in Dubai

Dim Sum in Dubai

Dubai-based Emirates NBD, which is the largest bank in the United Arab Emirates, is issuing $119 million in Dim Sum Bonds.

While the bank's issuance isn’t record breaking, it marks the first dim sum bond sale for the Gulf region and signals China's growing appetite for foreign investment.

In January, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited the United Arab Emirates and signed a $5.5 billion currency swap deal to boost trade and investments between the two countries. And with Emirates NBD entrance into the dim sum bond market is a sign of China's effort to strengthen its economic and diplomatic ties with oil-rich Gulf countries.

Is the RMB going bigger than 100?

David Nealis
Is the RMB going bigger than 100?
China National Radio reported that Shandong Provincial Federations of Industry and Commerce Vice President Zong Licheng has suggested that the largest RMB note the 100 Yuan is too small of a denomination and suggested that the Chinese government introduce 500 and 1000 Yuan banknotes in the near future. VP Zong was a CPPCC delegate at the time of his suggestion.

I completely agree with VP Zong, the cost savings to the Central Government in reduced transportation costs, paper, and ink would be huge. I would also suggest that they move toward using more 1 Yuan coins eventually eliminating the paper 1 Yuan banknote.

Wenzhou gets approval for private investments abroad

David Nealis President of Blue Bridge

Wenzhou gets approval for private investments abroad The Chinese central government granted residents of the city of Wenzhou the ability to invest privately overseas and set up loan companies which is a landmark financial pilot project. Premier Wen Jiabao chaired a State Council executive meeting which chose Wenzhou, a coastal city in eastern Zhejiang province with a long tradition of entrepreneurship, to be a "pilot zone" for a series of financial reforms. The 12 major points of the move include developing privately-owned financial services, setting up village banks and rural financial cooperatives and encouraging lending by state-owned banks to smaller businesses.
