China and Jordan ink US$2.5 billion oil shale deal
A consortium of Chinese and Jordanian power firms will be building a US$2.5 billion oil shale-fired power plant in Jordan following the signing of an MOU between China and Jordan. The deal was sealed during the visit of Jordan's King Abdullah II in Beijing. A consortium of China's Shandong Electric Power Construction Corporation (SEPCO III) and HTJ Group as well as Jordan's Al-Lajjun Oil Shale Company will build the power station in the southern city of Karak, with the aim of producing 900 mW of electricity, according to Chinese State Media.

This will be a very interesting project to watch, it’s my understanding that the Chinese oil firms lack the technology to properly extract shale oil.

China and Kyrgyzstan upgrade their relationship to strategic partnership
China and Kyrgyzstan agreed to upgrade their ties to a strategic partnership level and also to increase cooperation on security issues due the concern of rising radical Islamic fundamentalism in the region.
The upgrade means China has established strategic partnerships with all five Central Asian nations, paving the way for consolidated security and economic cooperation between China and the neighboring central Asian region.
Presidents Xi Jinping of China and Almazbek Atambaev,President of Kyrgyzstan announced the upgrade in ties after a meeting this month. Xi arrived in Bishkek for his first state visit there and to attend a Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. It was his last stop of his first Central Asian trip, which had taken him to Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
The Central Asian country with a population of 5.6 million borders the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. Some of the terrorists and organized crime groups in Kyrgyzstan have connections to groups in Xinjiang, China.
In a speech at Kazakhstan's Nazarbayev University on Saturday, Xi proposed establishing the economic belt, similar to the original, ancient Silk Road of more than 2,000 years ago, to boost cooperation between China and Eurasian countries, which have a combined population of 3 billion.
The presidents witnessed the signing of documents, including an agreement on the construction and operation of the Kyrgyzstan-China gas pipeline, which will be a key part of the fourth Turkmenistan-China natural gas pipeline is vital to China's domestic gas supply. The two nations also pledged to strengthen cooperation on energy and electric grid projects.
The two sides also vowed to boost cooperation in communications and transportation, and study the possibility of establishing cross-border infrastructure facilities.

China is Kyrgyzstan's largest importer and second-largest trading partner. Two-way trade reached $5.16 billion in 2012.

Despite concern over bad debts, Chinese banks beat market forecasts

Despite concern over bad debts, Chinese banks beat market forecasts
China’s banks are now seeking to improve their balance sheets for an anticipated increase in bad loans alongside weaker profit growth. Executives from China's major banks, including the Bank of China (BOC), the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) and the China Construction Bank (CCB) have raised concerns this week over their growing number of bad debts.   "Though our nonperforming loan ratio has been held below 1%, we still face big pressure from rising bad loans," said CCB Chairman Wang Hongzhang earlier this week. And ICBC President Yi Huiman said while ICBC would remain cautious against a potential pickup in bad loans, the bank’s non-performing loans are still well managed.
Though many analysts believe that the Chinese banking industry has been hit by overcapacity, strained by lending to local governments and State owned enterprises, all of China's major banks reported interim results better than market forecasts.

Sinopec Chairman Fu Chengyu made the announcement in which he stressed that the cost of the project will only be known following a detailed feasibility study.  According to Fu, by converting coal to natural gas, the energy efficiency of coal consumption would rise to 60%.  An 8,000-km pipeline from Xinjiang to Guangdong via Zhejiang will be constructed to carry the converted gas. The project is in line with China's strategy to increase energy efficiency and cut reliance on oil and gas imports according to state run media.
